Welcome to Willow Class
Hello! My name is Amy Phillips and I am the class teacher for our Key Stage 1 Class, called Willow. I am supported in class by Mr Bardot and Mrs Bryant.
Our classroom is to the rear of the school grounds and has windows on two sides making it a light and inviting space to learn. We also use an outdoor, undercover area where I ensure children have plenty of opportunities to engage in independent learning linked to our topics or things that the children find stimulating. We are also close to the school meadow and go there to play as often as we can.
A typical day in Willow begins with registration and myself and the other members of the team try to make sure we greet each child individually as they arrive. When they come in children can choose to go to a variety of planned activities which, again, are designed to interest and stimulate their brains.
We follow the KS1 National Curriculum. There is a strong focus on all our children being able to read and, perhaps just as importantly, enjoy reading. We have structured lessons in Maths, English (including phonics) and Science – these are known as the core subjects. All other subjects are Foundation subjects and lessons on these take place in the afternoon.
Children have regular breaks during the day. In the morning there is a 15 minute play break, which is preceded by a healthy snack provided by the government, there is also the opportunity for children in KS1 to have milk – sadly no longer free! Children in Willow eat their hot dinners or packed lunches between 12:00 and 12:30 and then have 30 minutes of outside play where they can socialise with children from Ash Class (our youngest) and sometimes play with the older children who visit the playground as Play Leaders.
Exercise or physical activity is vital to keeping bodies and minds awake and healthy so we ensure that we complete LEAP where we combine exercises which help coordination, strength and flexibility.
The link between parents and school is hugely important and we welcome contact and dialogue with parents and carers. As the teacher of the class I am happy to meet with parents/carers to discuss any areas of concern and my email is (aphillips@offwell-primary.devon.sch.uk).
